This presentation provides an overview of the government’s policy on the national infrastructure for efficient management and utilization of bioresources.
The Korea Bio Data Station (K-BDS) is a new bioinformatics infrastructure to collect, curate, store, and provide diverse kinds of biological data generated from government funded projects. Based on 53 meta-data standard formats established in 2020, the K-BDS aims to collect data from diverse fields including genomics, proteomics, microbiomes, metabolomics, pharmacogenomics, images, phenotypes, preclinical and clinical studies. It also aims to provide cloud computing resources to meet the needs of researchers for big data analytics. The K-BDS platform is established and maintained by KOBIC and KISTI. It also aims to integrate and interconnect existing genome data centers such as CODA, NABIC, and MAGIC that have served as important bioinformatics resources for post-genome projects. A total of 15 new projects were selected to provide value-added databases and bioinformatics tools to accelerate the utility of the K-BDS. Data type-specific bioinformatics centers (i..e, proteomics, metabolomics etc) will be established to collect and curate bio-data and provide bioinformatics services In this talk, I will briefly introduce the current status and future plans of the K-BDS platform as a new national bioinformatics infrastructure of Korea.
National Cancer Data Center: Current Advances and Future Directions
Abstract
Cancer big data is essential to better understand the underlying mechanisms for cancer development, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome. The National Cancer Center (NCC) Korea recognized the value of big data as a core resource for next-generation cancer research, and developed a Clinical Research Data Warehouse (CRDW) consisting of clinical data, genomic data (e.g., NGS sequencing), and medical image data (e.g., CT, MRI, mammography, pathology). The CRDW contains approximately 440,000 patients, and regularly accumulates data for all types of cancer. These datasets have been refined and into cancer registry consisting of clinically meaningful features. Researchers can access to CRDW through the NCC Clinical Research Portal. In addition, the NCC has also developed a cancer clinical data platform, CONNECT (Clinical Oncology Network for Unified Electronic Medical Data), involving 10 cancer hospitals nationwide. The CONNECT platform aims to establish a national representative cancer clinical database for the 10 most commonly diagnosed cancers in Korea. By expanding this platform, the Korean government is going ahead with the K-CURE (Korea Clinical data Utilization for Research Excellence) Project to link data from public sites such as Korea Central Cancer Registry, National Health Insurance Service, Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, and Statistics Korea, and cancer medical records from hospital. Data will represent more than 70 percent of newly diagnosed cancer cases nationwide. In 2021, an amendment to the Cancer Control Act was implemented to ensure the collection and use of cancer data at the national level. Under the law, NCC has been designated as the National Cancer Data Center (NCDC), and will play a role in collecting, linking, and utilizing data held by public institutions. The NCDC will drive scientific discovery by connecting data sets with analytics tools to allow users to share, integrate, analyze, and visualize cancer research. Especially, multi-omics data produced form the Cancer Proteogenomics Research Group will be collected in the NDCD database. Researchers will have access to highly curated and standardized clinical, and proteomic data, as well as an intuitive interface to filter, query, search, visualize, and download all data and metadata. Cancer data allows the study of how and why cancer devleops and informs ways of tailoring prevention and treatment for individuals.
